CEN® Practice Exam

Have you considered taking the BCEN practice exam?  BCEN's practice exam offers you many distinct advantages over other practice exams such as the only practice exam that uses retired exam questions. Click here for more information, or to purchase the CEN practice exam.

Note:  The practice exam is not required to sit for the actual CEN certification exam.  BCEN does not guarantee the success of a CEN exam candidate who has taken the practice exam.

Two Options Available

BCEN® offers two CEN practice exams through its test delivery provider, Pearson VUE.  BCEN offers both a 50-question version and a 150-question CEN practice exam.

Both CEN practice exams match the blueprint of the CEN exam. The practice exams conform to the specifications of the CEN exam, both in terms of content and average difficulty level. The CEN practice exams are revised approximately every 5 years.

50-Question CEN Practice Exam—although the content coverage is not as broad (the practice exam is 50 questions, whereas the CEN exam is 150), it is still intended to reflect the knowledge level required of an emergency nurse. The questions represent each category of the CEN content outline by approximately one third. For example, the category of Gastrointestinal, Genitourinary, Gynecology, and Obstetrical Emergencies has 21 questions on the CEN exam and 7 questions on this practice exam. The 50-question CEN practice exam costs $30.

150-Question CEN Practice Exam—this practice exam contains the same 50 questions found in the 50-question version plus an additional 100 questions. These 150 questions represent each category of the CEN content outline. The 150-question CEN practice exam costs $75.

Advantages to Taking the CEN Practice Exam

Taking the CEN practice exam will help you in the following ways:

  • Gain familiarity with computer-based testing. The questions on the practice exam are presented in a computer based testing form.  By taking the CEN practice exam, it will help you get familiar with this type of testing on a computer prior to taking your CEN exam.
  • Experience the types of questions you will be asked on the CEN exam. Some questions on the practice exam have been used previously in a version of the CEN exam. By taking the practice exam, you can experience the types of questions written for the CEN exam.
  • Answer questions and receive feedback. You can immediately grade each of your responses and then see the correct answer with a rationale and references.
Note:  Taking the practice exam does not guarantee you will have an advantage in passing the actual certification exam over candidates who do not use this practice exam.

Ways to Use the CEN Practice Exam

Once you are signed up for the practice exam, you have access to it for a maximum of 90 days. During that time, you can open the exam as often as you like. There are three test modes from which to choose:

  • Certification mode – closely simulate the actual testing environment
  • Study mode – allows you to request the correct answer(s) and explanation during the test and the test taker can configure options
  • Custom mode – allows you to specify preferred testing environment such as objectives, timer, randomization, item quantity, items missed previously, etc. Upon completion of the exam, you are given the option of obtaining a score report and explanations of the correct answer. You can access the practice exam(s) as many times as you’d like within your 90-day purchase window.

You can use the CEN Practice Exam to receive feedback:

  • Receive feedback.  If you want feedback, simply open the exam in Study Mode as often as you like, and click on the “Show Answer” button to score each response and get feedback. In Study Mode you can set the option to allow answer changes.
