“Excuse me, nurse?” Something is wrong with our baby. Can you please help us?” These were the words uttered by a new mom many years ago when I was still fairly new in my nursing career. I had landed my dream job in the Emergency Department and was working the night shift when brand new parents came in with their 3-day-old baby girl. The baby was beautiful and sleeping peacefully in her car seat. The Emergency Department(ED) was very busy that evening. However, looking at the faces of the parents, I knew there must be something happening that needed immediate attention.

In early 2012, Oscar Njihi sat at a desk doing his job: handling the financial aspects of foreclosures at a law firm. The job wasn’t glamorous, but for the Kenyan native it seemed like the next right step towards a successful start in business. Little did Njihi know that only a few short months later, not only would his career path change, but so would his definition of success. The job wasn’t glamorous, but for the Kenyan native it seemed like the next right step towards a successful start in business.

The Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN®) and the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (PNCB) have mutually agreed to dissolve the joint ownership of the Certified Pediatric Emergency Nurse (CPEN) program. As such, BCEN is now the sole owner of the CPEN exam and program. BCEN is grateful for our partnership with PNCB these past several years, as together our organizations developed and launched this much needed and valued certification. BCEN is fully committed to the continued success of the CPEN program.

Service to CPEN exam candidates and current CPENs will not be impacted by this change, and the CPEN credential remains valid for all actively certified CPENs. In addition, BCEN is working closely with the Accreditation Board for Specialty Nursing Certification (ABSNC) to ensure this change in ownership does not affect the current accreditation status of the CPEN program.
